Chinese smartphone makers, including Oppo Mobile , Vivo India and Xiaomi Technology , have been found evading taxes worth Rs. 9,000 crore in India, Parliament was informed on Friday.  Data shared by the Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar in Rajya Sabha showed tax evasion of around Rs. 9,000 crore, comprising customs duty and GST, has been detected between 2018-19 and 2022-23. The government has recovered Rs. 1,629.87 crore from the companies during the period. According to the data, Oppo Mobile India has been found evading Rs. 5,086 crore in taxes which includes Rs. 4,403 crore in customs duty and Rs. 683 crore in the form of GST. Vivo has evaded taxes worth Rs. 2,923.25 crore comprising Rs. 2,875 crore in customs duty and Rs. 48.25 crore in GST, according to the written reply by Chandrasekhar. Smartphone maker Xiaomi is betting big on the Rs. 10,000-Rs. 15,000 device segment to regain its lost market share, a senior official of the company said on Friday.  Xiaomi India President, Muralikrishnan B said that the company has come up with a reset strategy and will focus to be "India's most loved and trusted smartphones " and IoT brand with "focus on efficiency and sustainability with a secure foundation." He said that Xiaomi will operate with a leaner product portfolio and focus on democratising 5G in the country. "Today most of the 5G devices that are being sold are above Rs. 20,000. Toyota Motor plans to use regenerative fuel cell technology to power a manned lunar rover , executives said on Friday, raising the prospect of eventually using the moon 's water ice as an energy source in the future. Japan has stepped up its space ambitions under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Apple is working on artificial intelligence (AI) offerings similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, sending its shares up as much as 2 percent to a record high. The iPhone maker has built its own framework, known as "Ajax", to create large language models (LLMs) and is also testing a chatbot that some engineers call "Apple GPT", the report said, citing people with knowledge of the matter. The company did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.
